You don't have to install everything that comes with a distribution, nor do you need to keep everything you've installed on your system.
Sendmail is most definitely SMTP, and that is it. If you want to read mail, you will have to put IMAP on. If you run redhat-config-services, you should see if it is already installed, in which case you can check the box, and then you can even restart xinetd from …
That reminds me. I need to do that. Managing these different GUI interfaces is a pain, especially when the convenience of linuxconf was great even when remote.
