how can i refresh the content page without refreshing the master page. i dont want to use frames, so came up with master page.i also wanted the master page to be fixed without scrolling and only the content page to be scrolled.

first content place holder corresponds to the head section and the later to the body section. i think u might have removed the body section and tried to insert the content into the content place holder that corresponds to the head section. try keeping the place holder with the id …
try giving out the content page same as that given to the master page id. also see the content page has the master page file directive
