if you are concerned about your files, yes you can get an external enclosure and copy the files you want... of course you will need another computer to access the files and save them to.
boot from a cd and check the system out before you bring it somewhere. re-seat the memory, remove the hard drive and boot from a CD using a live OS.. See what happens.. it's better than spending alot of money to find out something silly was wrong..
definetly go with the live cds, there are several of them out there.. goto distrowatch.com and you will get to see everything that is out there. have fun!!

When did this problem start? was it running hot? sounds silly but have you tried re-seating your memory?
